Why James 1:27

by | Jun 30, 2025

James 1:27 “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widow in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.”

This is the Word of the Living God! He has commissioned us to do this work. God loves widows so much. When the Lord gave us this name, I was deeply moved by the word “religion”. It means belief in the existence of God. Pure religion means you are a person who carefully maintains the laws of the religion, the laws that God has given us. One of the laws He has clearly and repeatedly given us is to take care of the widows and orphans. We must take care of the widows and orphans, and refuse to let the self-centered world culture corrupt us. If you love God, you must love the widows and orphans.

Today, many churches are taking care of themselves and not the children, widows, and orphans. They are the ones who need us. They are the ones that Jesus said, “if you do for the least of these. You do for Me. (Matthew 25:40)

Acts 6:1 But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food”.

Acts 6:3 “Chose honorable men to take care of this ministry. Those who have a good reputation, integrity, honorable, wisdom and full of the Holy Spirit. We will give them this business, responsibility and duty.”

The disciples took care of the matter that offended God. God tells us this story to communicate that, as much as widows and orphans can be looked down upon by man, God watches over them. God handpicked special people to take care of them.

God says He is the husband of the widows (Isaiah 54:5). We cannot allow them to be forgotten or neglected. I want you to see through the Scriptures  how God loves and protects widows and orphans so much:

Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.”

Psalm 146:9 The Lord watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.”

Psalm 68:5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.”

Zechariah 7:9-10  “Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.”

Exodus 22:22  You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.”

Psalm 82:3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.”

Exodus 22:22-24 You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry, and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.”

Deuteronomy 27:19  “‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.

We as the church must defend the widow and orphan.  They have a special  spiritual connection with God. He watches over them as the Scriptures above makes clear. God also provides His blessing to those who obey and take care of the widows and orphans. They are people who can speak life into us and into the church. God will be happy with us. The widows  will be so blessed and they will thank our God for taking care of them.

Job 29:12-13  “Because I delivered the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to help him. The blessing of him who was about to perish came upon me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy”.

I met Pastor Patrick Mukhwuana when he reached out to me on Messenger. I don’t remember what he said. Most of you know that in America we get a lot of people from developing countries reaching out to us. They know we are a blessed country, not perfect but surely blessed as compared to many other countries.
