Pruned, Not Punished

by | Jul 29, 2026

If we’re not careful, we’ll misread what God is doing in quiet seasons.
Jesus says,

“Every branch in Me that does not produce fruit He removes, and He prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit.” (John 15:2)

Pruning is not the rejection it feels like. It’s a stamp of sonship and daughtership, a heavenly investment.

This matters for the disciple who feels stalled. For the one who looks at their life and wonders why things that once worked no longer do. For the one tempted to take control because waiting feels unproductive, and dare I say it? Lazy.

Pruning feels like loss when it’s actually precision, refining, and fine-tuning. God removes what competes with fruitfulness. He cuts back what drains life, even if it once served a purpose. Not because He’s displeased, but because He sees what you’re capable of carrying next.
Jesus goes on to say,

“You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.” (John 15:3)

Pay attention here to what He doesn’t say. He doesn’t say, Try harder. He doesn’t say, Fix yourself. He reminds them they’ve already been made clean. That work, gentle reader, has already been completed.

The one who wants to take life by the reins often does so because they mistake pruning for abandonment. But pruning is proof you’re still attached. Proof that the Gardener is paying attention. Close, attentive, and with great care. Remaining means trusting God’s hand even when it feels invasive.

Let’s Pray
God, help me not to resist Your work in my life. I don’t want to misinterpret pruning as rejection or silence as absence. Give me discernment to recognize when You are refining me for greater fruit. Teach me to remain when letting go feels uncomfortable. Amen.

Living It Out Loud

Reflect:
What has God been removing or quieting in your life that you’ve been tempted to fight?

Do:
Instead of forcing progress today, ask God what He’s forming beneath the surface.

Declare:
I trust the Gardener. What He removes makes room for greater fruit.

Plus, breakfast and lunch aren’t provided. Despite these difficulties, the children truly value their education and are respectful.

Why James 1:27

Why James 1:27

James 1:27 “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widow in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” This is the Word of the Living God! He has commissioned us to do this work. God loves widows so much. When the Lord gave us this name, I was deeply moved by the word “religion”.
